🏞️ Ancient Native American Settlements
The Boulder Valley has been home to Native American people for nearly 13,000 years. The region was inhabited by Ute, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Pawnee, Shoshone, Sioux, and other tribes. They moved seasonally across the mountains and plains, and retreated to the Front Range in the winter.
⛏️ Gold Prospecting and Settlement
In 1858, prospectors from Fort St. Vrain arrived in the Boulder Creek area. Their arrival brought the possibility of conflict with the Arapaho leader, Chief Niwat, but he welcomed them. In 1859, gold was discovered at Gold Hill, marking the beginning of permanent settlement in Boulder.
🎓 Founding of the University of Colorado
In 1876, the Colorado Territorial Legislature appropriated funds to establish the University of Colorado at Boulder. The university officially opened on September 5, 1877. The first year enrolled 15 college students and 50 preparatory students.

🎭 Colorado Chattahoochee Movement
In 1898, the Colorado Chattahoochee was founded in Boulder, serving as a center for education, culture, and recreation. It is the only continuously operating Chattahoochee west of the Mississippi and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

✊ Black community in Boulder
The black community in Boulder has a long history. Many black families lived in the area known as "The Little Rectangle". The black population reached 166 in 1910, but it declined over the next decade. The Ku Klux Klan's influence grew in Boulder in the 1920s, creating challenges for the black community.

🌳 Pioneer in Land Conservation
Boulder is known for its environmental stewardship. In 1967, city voters approved a sales tax that was used to preserve open space around the city. This reflects the city's environmental vision.
🕯️ Los Sis de Boulder
In 1974, six Chicano activists and students were killed in two car bombings in Boulder. The incident became known as "Los Sis de Boulder" and is an important chapter in the history of Boulder's social justice movement.
